Testifying as the first prosecution witness, Cheung stated that the family of Choi's ex-husband, Alex Kwong Kong-chi, was "penniless" and never provided financial assistance for Choi's two children. She claimed they never purchased baby formula or treated her family to meals.

Cheung also described Alex Kwong as adept at persuading others to assist him. Following his divorce from Choi, Kwong allegedly convinced her to lend him her credit card for living expenses in mainland China while he was a fugitive from a theft case.

The court heard that the alleged motive for Choi's killing was a dispute over a HK$72 million property. Prosecutors suggested a significant wealth disparity between the families as a potential reason for the crime.

Choi's stepfather, a successful businessman, reportedly provided substantial financial support to Cheung and Choi, including a monthly allowance exceeding HK$1 million. Cheung testified that Alex Kwong was never observed working during the time he lived next to Choi's family home.

Despite the separation in 2015, Cheung stated her family maintained a good relationship with the Kwongs, covering all expenses for their grandchildren's trips, with the Kwongs only paying for their own airfare.
