After last November’s blaze at Wang Fuk Court, authorities rolled out a HK$7.8 billion (US$994 million) plan to buy back flats at the eight-block subsidised housing estate.
Under the scheme, participants can use the cash compensation to buy a flat on the private open market or join a special sales exercise to purchase new subsidised housing under the government’s “flat-for-flat” arrangement.
A special arrangement also gives priority selection to the first 35 households that signed their letters of acceptance by June 30, giving them the pick of 4,400 flats at 10 subsidised housing estates.
The estates, developed by the Housing Authority and Housing Society, are located in areas such as Kowloon Bay, Kai Tak, Tseung Kwan O, Kwun Tong and Fanling. Among them are Sierra Terrace in Fanling, which was completed earlier this year, and Shing Chi Court in Kowloon Bay, which is due to be ready by the end of this year.
The remaining developments are expected to be available in 2027 and 2028. A resident surnamed Lee, who lived in Wang Shing House at Wang Fuk Court, was the first to select a replacement flat when he visited the Green Form Subsidised Home Ownership Scheme Sales Office in Kwun Tong’s Pioneer Place.
